The Story of 6

Right now we are the story of 6...me, Patrick, Destin, Arwen, Daisy and Duke.

I am not sure when we will be ready to be the story of 7 or 8...but I do know that its not anytime soon. I love our family of 6. 6 is wonderful. Especially since we aren't outnumbered yet - Patrick takes one and I take the other.

Now that Arwen is old enough to sit up and does not want to be in her carseat - she likes to be in the stroller or shopping cart where she can see everything and not lay down propped up in her car seat. And Destin has to be held part of the time (due to her running away) and not wanting to stay with us. Also because of her nursemaids elbow - if she pulls too hard while we are holding her hand/arm - her elbow pops out of place (this is something we have to remind others about as well!).

The past two weeks or so (since Arwen is sitting up), every time we go anywhere I can't help but think about if we had one or two more. I am happy to say that we are not ready - nowhere close. We talked about trying again towards the end of this year...when Destin would be closer to 3 and Arwen would be 1 - but I am not so sure yet. By the time he/she (baby 3) would arrive the girls would be closer to 4 and 2..so maybe that would work?! I just don't know.

I am curious to find other moms out there with more than 2 children/babies - when did you know you were ready? Or were you not ready? How do you handle that many children at once?

My cousin who is a year older than I am has 3 boys (they are ages 4, 3 and 2) and 1 girl on the way in a few months - we don't talk as often as I would like (maybe once every two or three months - and we live less than 15 minutes away from each other). I just worry what life will be like then...

Right now - we don't go out that often...just to the grocery store (usually I go with Arwen or Pat goes by himself); the zoo (always together); the park (the one by our house since there is no traffic there and I don't have to worry about Destin running off)...Patrick and I have only had 1 date night in 2 years and that was before I was pregnant with Arwen (over a year ago). If we have more children - does that mean no date night ever? No movies? No going out to dinner? No going to the store as a family?

I know that our situation is different. I am extremely protective over my girls. I don't want to leave them anywhere or have them stay the night somewhere besides our house (in fact, they still haven't). The first time I was away from Destin was when Arwen was born (and I cried every day). I am a big baby and I worry way too much. Patrick on the other hand, I am not really sure. I think he would be okay with us leaving them somewhere, but maybe not. I know that he would like to have a date night - its a miracle we get any alone time now (would we have alone time in the future?).

Maybe we are rushing into it..we are both still pretty young. I will be 27 this year, and Patrick will be 30. We are not old - we are still for the most part healthy. I would love to meet my goal of losing weight, eating healthier, having a date night (just us), getting the girls pics taken, going on vacation (another post!) --- all before having another sweet baby to call our own. I know that's alot of goals - and we may or may not meet all of them, but at least I can throw it out there, and hope for the best or make a to-do list, as I always do.

The Tiger Mom

Calling all parents! If you are an avid reader of parenting books, magazines, blogs and/or newsletters...you may have heard of the Tiger mom. At first, I thought it was about Tiger Woods, so I really didn't pay attention to all the hype at first. But as I saw more and more posts online, and news articles discussing the so-called "Tiger Mom" I thought I better take a look...here are several articles I found on the web discussing Amy Chau and her debatable parenting style:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Hymn_of_the_Tiger_Mother

So, what do you think? What are your thoughts? Here are some of the things she did not allow her to children to do: attend a sleepover, have a play date, be in a school play, complain about not being in a school play, watch TV or play computer games, choose their own extracurricular activities, get any grade less than an A, not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama, play any instrument other than the piano or violin, not play the piano or violin.

I know every parent has their own style or way they raise their children, but I am just not so sure about not allowing my girls to go to a sleepover (when they are much older), playing with other children, not watching television (which helps my girls learn, sing, dance and more!), and choosing their own extracurricular activities (my girls will choose what they want to do - sports, play an instrument, sing, dance, or whatever they want)...I know I wish I would have been done something in elementary or younger....I never played sports (which is probably why I don't like them or understand them), I never did dance or gymnastics..and never really had a chance to make friends outside of school (which all of them were the same as me - no extracurricular stuff).

I want my girls to grow up happy knowing that they could choose what they want to do, watch on television (for the most part), play with friends, and more..I want them to get involved with their community, donate their time, and give to others. I want them to be creative, loving, caring individuals...

I will never call my children fat, or unworthy - or be upset if they make anything else but an A grade on something. My children will do their best and that's all that matters.

2 Year Old Letter to Destin

Since I wrote a letter to Arwen for her 7 month, I thought I should go ahead and write one to Destin too...so here we go:

Dear Destin Paisley,

I know I say it all the time, but its so hard to believe you are now 2 years old...2 years since you were born, and changed our lives forever. I can still remember when you were born, learning how to sit up, crawling, walking, your 1st birthday, and all of those memorable milestones since then.

You are now talking in full length sentences (you have been for awhile!) with an amazing vocabulary! Walking, skipping, jumping, running and on the go all the time - nothing seems to slow you down!

Sleep is still something that you don't want to accept into your life...you just don't want a bed/nap time - I hope that is something we can work on together this year. I would love to say that by the time you were 3...you would go to sleep on your own, and sleep in your big girl bed all night long.

Something else I hope we can work on this year...is you not running away and listening to mommy. You always want to run away from mommy at the store or at home when its time to get dressed. I know its hard to follow directions sometimes which is all apart of growing up - but you can do it, I know you can! I believe you can be the most well behaved child I have ever met - it just takes time and patience from both of us.

Eating is something that you love to do...pizza, mac n' cheese, quessadillas, lunch-ables, pasta, strawberries, grapes and hot dogs are some of your favorites! But you are just like your mommy - where you always are willing to try something new.

You are a big fan of watching television and movies lately...Dora the Explorer, Elmo (not so much), Caillou, Max and Ruby, Diego, Disney movies (Finding Nemo, Toy Story and more), Shrek and others too!

You are always up for an adventure...going to the zoo and playing at the park are some favorite things you love. You love the monkeys and going down the slide! You are always learning - colors, shapes, numbers, counting, alphabet letters and more! You know all of your animals and the sounds they make.

You are just about done with potty training! Yay! Soon you won't need pull ups at bedtime...mommy cannot wait!

It just amazes me everyday how smart you are and how caring you are! You are always wanting to give kisses, hugs and snuggles with your daddy, mommy or your baby sister. You really do care a lot about other people and their feelings - you always want to make sure everyone is happy.

You are such an amazing big sister..always bringing Arwen toys, playing peek a boo, and singing/dancing with her.

I cannot wait to see what this next year has in store for you...I know you will be learning more every day and having fun as much as possible!

Love,
Mommy

7 Month Old Letter to Arwen

I have seen several other mommy blogs out there that write letters to their little ones each month...and I thought I would give it a try. I am not sure I will go back and add the older months yet...I will just have to see how much time I have. So here we go:

Dear Arwen Kinsley,

Its so hard to believe you are now 7 months old! Time is just flying by and you are growing up before our eyes...you are now able to sit up, and are in the process of learning how to crawl. Right now you like to scoot on your belly and it almost looks like you are swimming on the floor!

You are eating so good..just a few weeks ago you started eating rice cereal/oatmeal for breakfast & dinner. You are also eating baby foods (here is short list of what you have tried): peas, green beans, sweet potatoes, peaches, bananas, apples, and carrots. You still do great at breastfeeding too - at least six times a day or every two to three hours.

We have been waiting for you to get your first tooth...and it looks like you are getting your two bottom ones at the same time this week.

You are growing nonstop...some of your 6 and 6 -9 months clothing are starting to get to small..which means we are moving up to 6 - 12, and 9 months outfits. I had you wear your first pair of the shoes this past weekend - and you looked so grown up! Before we know it, you will be learning how to walk!

You are such a good talker, and you can always be seen with a smile on your face and in  your eyes (which are still baby blue!). You love to laugh out loud and share your voice with others. Your favorite new word is "dada" which is your first word. You say "mama" sometimes, but usually just when you cry (which is only when you are tired, hungry or have a tummy ache).

Sleep is something you don't mind...you take at least two naps a day (and you are the only one who really sticks to a schedule right now). You still sleep all night long (you have since you were 6 weeks old) and you love to play in your crib. You usually go to sleep on your own every night and sleep all night long. Then every morning I come in and you are talking, cooing and wiggling all around :)

You are learning how to wave bye bye or hi. Its so neat to see you do this!

You love your big sister...you are always trying to give her kisses or pull her hair. And she loves  you so much! I only hope that you two will be the best of friends as grow up together.

We are so excited to see you grow up and meet every new milestone in your path. I know by next month you will be crawling all over the place - talking more and eating new foods! I love you so much!

Love,
Mommy

"Cinderella: Ninja Warrior" by Maureen McGowen

"Cinderella: Ninja Warrior" by Maureen McGowen
(click on the link to see her blog)

Description: In this fast-paced story full of adventure and romance, Cinderella is more than just a servant girl waiting for her prince--she's a tough, fearless girl who is capable of taking charge of a dangerous situation. Seeking to escape the clutches of her evil stepmother, Cinderella perfects her ninja skills and magic talents in secret, waiting for the day when she can break free and live happily ever after. In a special twist, readers have the opportunity to make key decisions for Cinderella and decide where she goes next--but no matter the choice; the result is a story unlike any fairy tale you've ever read!

My thoughts:
I really enjoyed the fact that you (as the reader) can make decisions for Cinderella (I wish more books had this option!)...you get to decide if she wants to go to the ball or not (answering her stepmother), if she will use the wand or not (at the magic competition, which is the same day as the ball), and lastly if she wants to dance with the prince at the ball or not. Since I had the time and I was curious to find out both choices...I read both. Both were similar, but different. Although I found that whether you made choice A or B, you ended up at the same point in the book - and some of the phrases or action in the book did not seem correct depending on the choice you made. I am not sure if I am making sense here...but for example if you chose Choice A, in the next chapter you would be at the same point if you would have chose Choice B. So the chapter you are in did not make complete sense and the end result was sort of the same either way.

Some things I did not enjoy..was that either way (choice A or B) you would end up in the same spot in the book. And once you made your choice, the end result kind of seemed out of place or misunderstood had you not made the right choice. After making my second choice in the book, it said that Cinderella had the wand either way (even though you chose for her NOT to use it).

Although I found that after reading both choices all the way through the book - I would go back and say I like this version/choice better.

I didn't like how sometimes there was empathy from one of the stepsisters, and then sometimes not. I guess that can be confusing with all versions of Cinderella (movies or books alike). There was also some confusion or mixture of magic and ninja skills - I couldn't figure out why the author wouldn't choose one or the other, or does Cinderella need both? I guess you need ninja skills in order to completely be magical.

Last but not least...
I have to say I really enjoyed the ending and surprised to find out what happened at the ball! If you enjoy reading about romance/suspense - this definitely the book for you. This new twist on Cinderella is definitely one that I enjoyed reading :) I would give this book 4/5 stars!

According to McGowen's publisher, she also has another book coming out called Sleeping Beauty: Vampire Slayer...which I would love to read! Click on this link to read more about it: http://s3.amazonaws.com/netGalley/PUB11202/1624twisted_tales.pdf

Where are all the animals?

On Sunday, before the (unofficial) fifth or sixth snowstorm of 2011, our family managed to make an escape outside in the beautiful upper 60 degree weather to the Zoo! The entire time we were driving, Destin kept asking, "Where are all the animals?"

If you live in or around Kansas City you may have heard the buzz over the last year about our newest addition the Kansas City Zoo: Nikita the polar bear. Upon entering the zoo, you will see an all new entrance - along with the sea otters and a brand new polar bear exhibit. Due to the weather some of the exhibits were closed or the animals were inside while they were doing construction - like the sea lions and Africa.

Here is really awesome pic I took of Nikita swimming in the water...

We loved watching him..and where we were standing when I took this pic - he would swim around in a circle, swim under the water blowing bubbles out of his mouth/nose and push off with one paw against the glass. I wish I would have got a pic of his paw on the glass.

After visiting the polar bear, we visited "Asia" where we saw tigers, orangutans, exotic birds, monkeys and more. We then went on to "Australia" where we saw singing dogs, kangaroos, and other animals. Then off to the farm area - where they have goats and sheep on display. We also got to the camels, play on the playground, go in the interactive children's farm and finished off with seeing the elephents. Here are some of my favorite pics from the zoo that I took:

Destin & Daddy saying hello to the goats...
she was a little scared of them!

I love this pic of Arwen in her monkey hat.

I love this one of the girls together!

Destin was showing off her climbing skills for this one!

Daddy took a pic of the girls & I together

Destin really liked the elephants...
they actually came up close to the fence to say hello!

Overall a really great trip! I cannot wait til the weather warms up & we can go more often this spring. We bought a Friends of the Zoo membership last year, and we have been debating on which one to get for this year since they will have a new "Skyline" ski-lift ride in Africa which will open in the spring. They have several different kinds of memberships - single, couples, families; and then you have the option of adding unlimited rides on the tram, train & carousel. The new ski-lift feature sounds really neat - but I am not so sure what the age/size limits are for it - the girls are still pretty little, and I'm not so sure they would be able to ride it...so we will just have to see what we decide.

Ch, Ch, Ch, Changes...

I don't have many "followers" here on my blog, so I am not sure if anyone will even notice...but over the past few days I came accross a collection of several blogs with very unique backgrounds, buttons and other technology lingo for blogging. So I thought I would try it out. What do you think?

I hope to have more time in the future to add more pages, a signature, blinkies & other fun stuff...having a blog is more than just journaling - its a way to express your personality and the person you are.

Schools out for winter!

Living here in Missouri most of my life I still find it mind boggling how one day we can have below freezing temperatures, snow falling and ice on the ground; but then days later, we have upper 60/lower 70 degree weather.

Today marks probably the fourth or fifth winter storm our neck of the woods has received since January. We had no snow for Christmas...but then closer to New Years we finally got some flakes. I really wanted the girls, especially Destin to play in the snow for the first time...since last year she was too young (at 9/10 months old).

With so many winter storms...that means no school for several school districts in the area. The roads are horrible, people are nervous/crazy/slow/fast (you name it - its out there on the road behind a wheel of a car!)...I am thankful that the students are not put in harms way, and that the supervisors of the schools are smart enough to close the schools when the weather gets so bad outside. But I do feel sorry for all those children  AND teachers who will be attending school way past the "official last day" and for some going into June. I have heard that some schools (instead of going to school til June something?) are attending school an extra 15-20 minutes everyday to make up all the lost days. I am not sure if that will work or not...but some schools are desperate and have other things going on come summer time (like construction, etc.).

Summer vacations will be cut short, and summer school will be sooner than expected. Last year, I remember the same thing occurred...in fact, my mother (who is a school nurse in Blue Springs) had 1 day off of school, then the following Monday is when Summer School started. Craziness?!?

On days like this I am glad that I am not teaching...I am happy to be home with my girls, not having to brave the roads, worry about rescheduling all of my lessons, and how to fit all the subject areas into two or three days a week.

Not to change the subject...but speaking of teaching/schools...I have heard several schools in order to survive the many government/state budget cuts are thinking about 4 day school days, or no more buses. But that's another post discussion...teaching in chaos - chaos not from the students, parents or even the demands of state standards - but from budget cuts.

"The Velveteen Bible"

"The Velveteen (Rabbit) Bible" by Thomas Nelson

Description:
A sweet addition to the Tommy Nelson Baby/Toddler Bible line, using an adorable image of a flocked velvet bunny. The Velveteen Bible features soft fur and a fuzzy tail! Inside, the New King James Version scripture is accompanied by whimsical images of bunnies and other baby animals, colorful borders, and lovely sentiments from the scriptures. The Bible is packaged in a keepsake treasure box.

Details about the book I found:
The book comes inside of matching book box with identical cover as the book itself. Both the cover of the box/book have soft fur to the touch and the bordering leaves/flowers.  Inside the box it came with a Quality brochure that provides a lifetime guarantee against manufacturing defects (pretty neat!). The Bible gives the owner pages to put their name, parents, birth (when and where) and spaces to mention their baptism, etc. The Bible is NKJV (New King James Version)...I don't know a lot about the different versions of the bible...but this one is in full length as far as I know.

My thoughts...
Upon receiving this beautifully bound and fuzzy Bible package (the box & book), it seems very inviting to young children ages 2 and up (my oldest daughters age). Sadly though, after opening the book I found it to be more for an older child aged 7 and up...the writing itself inside is incredibly small, and reminds me of an actual bible, and not a childrens version whatsoever. There are some really cute illustrated pages in three different places throughout the book, that I know my little ones would love, but again the book itself is not child (or for my case toddler) friendly. This particular bible would be perfect for an older child, even as a gift to new parents or baptism.

I give this book 3/5 stars..because I was expecting an all age kid friendly version of the bible with several pictures, large text, and even a bigger book itself...and we got a very small book with tiny print, and few pictures to enjoy.

Thank You so much Booksneeze for letting me review this book! I am really enjoying being apart of your bloggers reading program :) Take care and I look forward to reading more books in the future!

Life is not fair...

Last night, after everyone went to sleep I did my last minute checks via my phone with Twitter, Facebook, emails, etc. before reading some more on my nook. When I came across a post on Twitter via someone I "follow" who mentioned a blog that was very sad...

This fellow mommy blogger had a beautiful 4 month old daughter - who was perfect in every way...when suddenly she stopped breathing, and sadly died shortly after.

The moment I came to her blog I started to read every post, and I could not stop crying...tears kept streaming from my face, my stomach was in knots, and after awhile I found myself in the bathroom getting sick. Even now as I write this, I can't help but cry...I do not know this woman, or her family, but as a mother myself you can relate on so many levels. Reading something like this, makes you want to forget everything around you, stop what you are doing and run to your children just to make sure they are okay. In fact, after I read through her blog...I went to both the girls rooms and checked on them, giving them one more kiss goodnight.

It also makes you thankful for every picture, every video, every clothing item or toy that you have of your children. I have hundreds, if not thousands of pictures of Destin & Arwen...and I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I look at those pictures all the time, and tear up wishing the time had not gone by so fast.

I could not possibly imagine losing a child, losing one of my daughters...Arwen is only 2 months older than her baby girl.

Life is just not fair...why did her little girl have to die? Why? I am just so mad...upset...distraught...how could this happen? How could a beautiful healthy little girl be taken away from a loving couple?

Just days before it happened, her mommy wrote her 4 month old letter. A lot of bloggers I know do this...they write a letter to their baby talking about their favorite doings, sayings, outfits, etc. Her little girl had just started to learn to sit up, and would soon start eating cereal (a milestone that just a couple weeks ago Arwen achieved).

Her daughter's funeral is supposed to be held today and in the words of her mother:

"Maddie loves big bows. She always wore them. We would be honored if on Wednesday 2/23/11, in remembrance of Maddie, you would put a big bow on your daughters."

So, today I will make sure Destin & Arwen have big bows in their hair...in remembrance of Maddie. I ask that you please do the same...wear a bow and remember this baby girl that was taken away too early. Please put this family in your thoughts and prayers.

I want to share what I found another blog… “In honor of this little one's life - forget about the toys all over the house, the mess in your kitchen, the water the kiddos get all over the bathroom during bathtime tonight and the meal they didn't finish. Just hug them and love them and be extra thankful for them today. There are mothers and fathers all over the world that would do anything for one more chaotic, crazy, exhausting day like that.”

2 Year Checkup

Before I discuss the checkup, I wanted to mention Destin loves watching movies now - not all movies...but her favorite one right now is 'Finding Nemo'. I still remember when our nieces, Clara & Abby loved this movie. We had to watch it over and over again! Now they are in 2nd & 4th grade! Wow! They are the same age apart as Destin & Arwen are....I just know that time is going to fly by so fast and our girls will be the same age! EEK!

Also I wanted to add...Destin's new sayings ~ "Of course!", "Sure", "What's that smell?", "Peek a boo, where are you?" and tons more five/six word plus sentences...

So today was Destin's 2 Year checkup...I still cannot believe she is 2 years old! Wow! And this is what happened....

I have been lucky the last two times I have had to take the girls to the Dr...with Arwen, Pat was laid off & he was able to come with us. And this time around, for Destin's checkup, my mom did not have school so she was able to come with the girls & I. I just like having an extra set of hands - not everyone is so lucky when going to & from the doctor with two or more children in tow.

So minutes after we signed in, we went to the back where the nurse measured Destin's head circumference (49 cm - 86% ile...which I am thinking about adding to their growth chart on here - so I can compare the girls), her height, blood pressure (100/65), heart rate, and weight. She was 33 1/2 inches tall (39% ile) and 24 lb 15 oz (15% ile).

After a very long wait, Dr. Henschel came in...and we talked about Destin's potty training (which is still going really well - still working on going poop in the potty on time), vocab (which is amazing...and has me thinking about teaching early reading skills), physical/mental health, etc. Destin was in great condition! And the Dr was surprised that I did not have to bring her in for the past 6 mos for any cold/illness. That is definitely a perk of staying home and not attending daycare. The only time Destin ever got a bad cold was about a week after our visit to the E.R. on 12/31 with her nursemaids elbow....something about being in a hospital just makes you sick - and being around other sick people :( UGH!

Thankfully, she did not have to get any vaccines this time around...so we were able to get dressed and head back home. Destin does not have another checkup until she is 3 years old. It’s kind of weird to think she will now have yearly checks - where as a baby we had to bring her every 2-3 mos.

Of course the Dr, will be able to see Destin over the next year as we take Arwen in for her checkups...her next one is at 9 mos (less than 2 mos away!).

Heart Disease

Having a heart attack is not a choice...but going to the hospital three or more times within a three/four month period - I can't help but think that person has given up, or that they just don't want to listen to the doctors. Or maybe the doctor is giving the wrong info to the patient...or they don't know what they are supposed to be fighting for. I guess I am just venting here..but I have all these questions and feelings that just cannot be answered.

Its scary to think that heart disease is the number 1 killer in America...taking the life of 1 in 3 women every year...and that it has touched or will touch someone you know. Personally, on my husband's mothers side of the family it has been hit three plus times in three or more family members. I just hate thinking about the pain it causes not only to the person, but to the family that has to suffer the consequences. Even a healthy person can suffer from heart disease, but those that choose to be unhealthy...well its only a matter of when and where it will happen.

I just hope that a recent scare (with a family member) will motivate my husband and I to become more active, eat healthier and value the time we have with our loved ones. Because in all reality you just never know...everyone no matter what their age should exercise, eat healthy and try to live stress free.

Here is some more information about heart attacks, I just find it interesting since I really did not know what to look for, other than chest pains. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/HeartAttack/HeartAttack_LivingWith.html

"Bless this Mouse" by Lois Lowry

"Bless this Mouse" by Lois Lowry

Recently I came across this great site for e-book owners, called Net Galley. Basically you can read books with your e-reader for free in exchange for your review. NetGalley is a service for people who read and recommend books. Publishers upload their galleys, plus any marketing and promotional information; then invite contacts to view their title on NetGalley. Readers can also find new titles through NetGalley's Public Catalog, and request to review those titles from the publisher. So this is my first review for the company..

Description:
A resilient and quirky colony of church mice fears another Great X more than they fear cats. Under Mouse Mistress Hildegarde’s leadership, they save themselves from one danger after another—sometimes just by the skin of their tails! Can one ultimate act of bravery during the feast day of St. Francis get Father Murphy to bless these mice and keep them safe forever?

Lois Lowry spins an enchanting tale of a colony of church mice that go about their lives content in what they can forage from the kitchens and drawers of St. Bartholomew's Church, until they are found out by Father Murphy, who sensibly arranges for pest control to come in and deal with the rodent problem.

Lois Lowry, the author of some of the most famous children’s books, including, but limited to: "The Giver" and The Gooney Bird series, has created a new book all about the life of a church mouse called "Bless this Mouse".

"Bless This Mouse" is a quaint and lightly religious collaboration between Newberry medalist author
Lois Lowry and Caldecott medalist illustrator Eric Rohmann. Their words and illustrations play perfectly off one another in a fast-paced children's novel about the lives of church mice. Lowry manages to weave lessons into the story without seeming heavy-handed or preachy.

My Detailed Description:
Hildegarde is Mouse Mistress and matriarch of Saint Bartholemew's and she is responsible for making sure all two hundred plus mice who call the church home are safe and, more importantly, remain unseen by the humans. So when she realizes the Feast of Saint Francis is coming, she begins to panic. For this means the church will be filled with animals, especially their dreaded enemy (CATS!), for the Blessing of the Animals. As if Hildegarde didn't have enough problems, some mice make themselves known to the humans, and they face the Great X. Hildegarde must come up with a plan to outwit the exterminator with his sticky traps and poison and save their children and way of life for future generations of peaceful mice. Will she be able to save all of the mice?
They are God's creatures too after all! All their trials and tribulations (the outside, owls and rain) take place right before October 4th, the day The Blessing of the Animals is administered in the church in honor of St. Francis. When October 4th dawns, Hildegarde, fed up with the pomp and circumstance heaped on the parade of cats, dogs, ponies and even turtles who invade the church, makes a stand for mice and all God's creatures...no matter how small.

My thoughts...
This is not one of those books you will read to your child once and forget about. Bless This Mouse has a lesson to teach. I can guarantee it will get you and your children started in a discussion about kindness and forgiveness. This book has all the right elements for a perfect nightly story time: adorable illustrations, cute characters, humor and most of all, and important lesson to be learned. “Bless This Mouse” is destined to be a classic.

It has adventure, romance, fantasy (talking animals), suspense and more...it sort of reminded me of "The Tale of Despereaux" by Katie DiCamillo and "Stuart Little" by E.B. White (the same author of 'Charlotte's Web).

"Bless This Mouse" is a cute story, even if the main characters are rodents that would make most humans (including me) go "Eeek!" and it can be disconcerting to think of the areas that mice inhabit in our daily lives. Hildegarde and her brood are a likable bunch and the reader easily roots for their success against the obstacles they face. It is a story that adults and children will both like.
I have read some other reviews who said it was too religious...but not for my taste. I really enjoy reading how the mice practiced religion just as people do, and it really had me thinking twice about using mousetraps in our house. I absolutely loved the ending (which is rare for me…I usually do not enjoy the endings of books).

I really enjoyed reading this fictional tale of church mice. I could see myself reading this book to my daughter (when she is a little older), and I know she would love the illustrations! I would recommend this great book as a read aloud for first grade and up, or independent reading for second grade and up. I give this book 5/5 stars!

This book is not available yet (it is set to be published 3/21/11), but you can preorder it on Amazon:

Destin & Arwen playing together

When it comes to taking videos of the girls, I have to say I am horrible. We just don't take enough...the last videos I have is from before Christmas. I need to figure out how to upload videos to the computer with our video camera...then I could upload our wedding and some videos from Christmas. The video above I recorded on 1/20/11 of Destin & Arwen playing...they are so cute together! Destin just loves to make Arwen crack up! :)

"The Dragon and the Turtle Go on Safari"

"The Dragon and the Turtle Go on Safari"
Written by Donita K. Paul and Evangeline Denmark; illustrated by Vincent Nguyen

My Detailed Description:
Padraig and Roger have decided that they want to camp out ALL night long at the base of Mount Sillymanborrow. At first they have fun, eating tasty, crunchy bugs and making s'mores. However, the fun starts to go away when it begins to get dark and the noises of the wild start to ruin their evening. The boys begin to believe that the sounds they are hearing are animals in the wild, such as rhinos, elephants and monkeys, while in reality they were common animals you might find in your backyard...an owl (howler monkey), squirrel (giraffe), raccoon (elephant), and a dog (rhino). The boys share an adventure in the night when they help to save a small leopard (a kitten) from a tree (where the dragon learns he can blow fire for the first time). As the boys are finally deciding that it is too much for them to be out, dawn breaks and they realize they have been brave and have stayed outside ALL night long. Then they decide they need a nap before taking on any other adventures of the day.

My thoughts...
This is a story about Padraig (a dragon) and Roger (a turtle) who determine to go on a safari which is really staying out all night in their backyard. They have some adventures with some not so wild creatures during the night. The book is beautifully illustrated. The story seems to get bogged down at times. There is a bonus story at the end (The Legend of Mount Sillymanborrow - which wasn't scary at all - it was pretty cute!) and a page of conversation starters & questions to discuss courage and friendship with your children/classroom. There is also a bible verse which the story is supposed to be teaching about. Would be appropriate for preschool through elementary age children (ages 4 and up).

I felt the book was awkward to read aloud, because the characters used British sounding phrases such as "my good fellow," "Oh, righto," "Cheerio. Right jolly good," etc. The story line worked well to teach children about facing fears, and being kind to their friends.

My two year old daughter enjoyed the pictures, but the book was too lengthy/chatty to read to her, and awkward (as I mentioned above). The two characters seem to just talk balk and forth the entire story - which was kind of boring. The whole lesson of the story was supposed to be about being brave & how to not be scared of the dark - I'm not sure if the characters learned that lesson (they just stayed out there long enough until it was dawn). I wasn't a fan of the British phrases or the big vocabulary words either. I think I will wait to actually "read" this book to my girls for awhile...but until then we will enjoy looking at the beautiful pictures and learn to imagine & pretend together just as the boys do in the story.

A really cute book, but not outstanding. I give it 4/5 stars. You can find this book on Amazon or at a bookstore near you!

Thank You so much Blogging for Books and Waterhouse Multnomah for allowing me to share this book with my family! I cannot wait to read more books from you in the future!

Potty training

I thought I would update everyone on potty training...since the last time 2/3:

Destin was having about 1 pee pee & poo accident/day...but this week (since her birthday on Sunday), she has only had 1 (and that was going poop in her undies). Which is wonderful! I actually got her to poop in the potty a couple days ago, and she was so excited...but then the next day is when she had her 1 accident. And right after she went in her pants - she kept saying "I'm sorry mommy" and she told me "I go poop in the potty next time". So I know she knows what to do...we just have to keep working on it.

So I'm not sure what to think...there is no consistency - so, yay for no pee pee accidents! She tells us when she has to go, and sometimes will go by herself. I am teaching her how to wipe herself without my help. And she loves to flush the potty. I can only hope that she will get better as time goes by...

Daytime we are still doing undies only (we have been for awhile). As far as night time...we are still wearing pull ups, where most of the time she is wet the next morning, but sometimes (like today) she was dry. Again, no consistency (with or without a bedtime drink/snack).

In other potty news...I am having a Huggies Potty Training Dance Party on Saturday, March 5th - the one they have been advertising for on TV through House Party. I just hope some of her friends can come to it & play. It should be a lot of fun. I got my box of freebie goodies on Saturday, 2/12 - and there is lots of free stuff to give away :)

I am in denial!

About clothing for my girls, that is! Destin got lots of cute outfits for her birthday this past Sunday, and I went to clean out her closet - and took out more than half of her clothing that she just doesn't wear and can't wear anymore because she is growing up. She is just getting so big! She is now wearing 24 mos and up in shirts, but still at 18 mos for pants. I am lucky to even get her to wear clothing around the house, but when she does - it usually means no dresses anymore :( I guess I will have to reserve "dressing up" for Arwen.

As far as Arwen's closet...I have already had to clean it out three times ~ once for her newborn stuff, her 3 mos stuff, and then her 3 - 6 mos stuff. Now she is wearing 6 mos, 6 - 9 and 6 - 12 (old navy) sizes.

My girls are just growing up so fast...not only for their clothing, but for meeting each of their milestones. Destin is still talking more than ever and is always asking questions. Arwen is working on wanting to crawl - its only a matter of time before she does :) Wow! I just know time is going to fly by this year...I am looking forward to seeing my girls grow up!

An Interview Update

A few weeks ago I posted about my interview with a local school district, and just wanted to share the emails I got yesterday, as an update...

The first one - It basically said that I wasn't what they were looking for:

I would like to thank you for your willingness to be a candidate for a teaching position with the R-7 School District. Your application, including placement papers, transcripts, references, and preliminary interview, has been reviewed. While I believe you have many admirable strengths, there are other candidates whose qualifications more closely match the opportunities in the Lee's Summit R-7 School District.

Although I cannot give you further consideration at this time; I wish you success in attaining your career goals. Again, thank you for your interest.

But the second email said - I am so sorry, I sent you the wrong email, here is the right one:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your willingness to be a candidate for a position with the Lee's Summit R-7 School District. Your screening interview reflected your professionalism and caring attitude toward students.

Your application, including preliminary interview, placement papers, transcripts, and references, will be made available to the school principals with vacancies in your certificated areas. Should they request another interview, we will notify you by phone.

So...we will just have to see what happens. With the district's levy not passing, I am sure really sure if they will be hiring or firing teachers. I hope that they give me another opportunity to interview :)

Happy 2nd Birthday Destin!

I don't think anyone saw this but us...a birthday sign I put on our front door

Destin turned 2 today! I just can't believe that I am now a mommy to a two year old...I can still remember going into labor with her, driving to the hospital, and after a short while later she was born! I remember when we brought her home for the first time - when she met her big brother & sister (Daisy & Duke)...I hope that I never forget those first few days that she was born! I think as a mother, you can't forget - or maybe, for me I never will because she is my baby girl and alway will be.

Daddy was dancing & singing to Arwen & Destin the night before her big day

The decorations - we had steamers & ballons in the kitchen & living room

All this week, we worked on setting up decorations, cleaning our mess of a house & in the back of my mind I remembered - in 6 months we will celebrate when Arwen turns 1 year old! She had fun at her big sister's party...she wanted to eat all the wrapping paper :) Time is just flying by too fast!

A pic of Destin's cake from Price Chopper

A pic of Destin & her friend Melody/Eating her birthday cake

We had a get together at our house with our closest friends & family ~ with balloons, cake/ice cream & streamers! I also put together trays of veggies, fruit, chips & dip, and meat & cheese tray (which in the end nobody really ate any of the food we made - oh well!)...I think next year we will just do cake & ice cream ~ or better yet, cupcakes & icecream :) We will just have to see...

A pic of Destin & I opening up her presents...she needed some extra help!

A pic of Destin smiling at mommy after opening up all her presents

Destin had such a fun day with her friends & family - loved eating her cake & trying out the icing (not as big of a mess this year!) and finally opening all of her presents! She got money, tons of clothes, toys, & more! Thank you to everyone who made it so special!
